A guide to buying tiles.

Where do I start?

When you embark on a tiling project there is a lot to think about, this can be quite over whelming when you enter a showroom. Particularly if you haven’t done any research and you don’t know what is available. We have taken the stress out of the selection process by offering you a guide of what tiles we have for you.

Where can I use Ceramic tiles?peronda wave white

Ceramic tiles can be used in any room in your home, these tiles are produced for a specific purpose. A ceramic wall tile is suitable only for walls and cannot be used on a floor, a ceramic floor tile is suitable for use on both the walls and floors in your home. Ceramic tiles are most commonly used in bathrooms and on kitchen walls. Some people use them on their kitchen floors, but because ceramic tiles are made from a clay back with a glazed front on them, they can be prone to chipping and cracking if you drop keys knives etc. on them.

Where can I use porcelain tiles?alp stone almond 60x60

Porcelain tiles are also suitable for use in any room in your home, a porcelain tile is made from a much harder material than a ceramic tile. This makes them suitable for both the walls and floors in your home, this is why porcelain tiles are so popular. A porcelain tile is made of the same material all the way through this makes it very strong and robust, if you chipped it which would be difficult, it would be more inconspicuous. We would always recommend you buy a porcelain tile when you are tiling large living/dining areas. Porcelain tiles are available in several finishes you can get a natural matt finish on the tile, or you may like a lappato finish which means between natural and polished. With a lappato tile you get a nice sheen on the tile with a nice texture in the glaze, some would say you have the best both worlds. Porcelain tiles are also available in a polished finish this gives you a very luxurious end result with its mirror sheen finish. The tile above featured in the picture is Alp Stone 60x60cm

What about Natural stone ?

Natural stone floor tiles are absolutely stunning there is such a selection of material available on the market, there are some things you should consider before purchasing natural stone. There is a maintenance programme that should be followed, when your stone is installed it will be sealed with an impregnator which will stain proof and waterproof your tile. This is a very simple procedure where your tiler will either paint or sponge on a clear liquid and leave for the required drying time before tiling .You may have to re apply this once every six months to a year, if you follow all the installation instructions and seal and clean as recommended your stone floor tiles they will last a lifetime .
