How do Green Alegria Mosaic Tiles suit Glasgow’s new Indian Restaurant

Cosmo Tiles were delighted to be the tile supplier of choice for Usha’s, Glasgow’s only dedicated Indian Vegetarian restaurant, located in the heart of the West End on Byres Road.

The concept is the brainchild of Amanda Bhalla – “My Husband and I frequently dine out and one day realised there was a niche in the market for a high quality family friendly vegetarian restaurant, the concept was born.”

“We decided we wanted to open a restaurant that was not only comfortable and beautiful, we wanted great music, and we wanted the food to be delicious and authentic.”

The concept is one where you share your food, as is traditional in India. All of the dishes come in tapas sized portions complementing each other to create a delicious combination of flavours.

The restaurant opened in June of this year and has been a big hit so far. Laura Coogan of Coogan Architects was in charge of the project and brought Cosmo on board to supply the tiles.

Laura tells us more: “I was really interested in this project and I think it’s a great idea. When it came to tiles I went straight to Cosmo because I’d used them before and I knew that they were local to Glasgow. When I called them, the rep got back in touch straight away which was important. They created a good impression.”

The tiles chosen were a vibrant green Alegria Mosaic (28.6×28.6cm sheet) from Dune and as part of the process a range of samples was provided for Laura to consider.

“We went with the green tiles because they reflected what the restaurant was all about. They complemented the ideas that we had here about the food – good quality, vegetarian and really fresh. There is a big Indian community in Glasgow and Usha’s is filling a gap in the market. Did you know that in India most restaurants are vegetarian and only offer a “meat option” in the same way that English restaurants offer a vegetarian option?”

The tiles were a hit with the owners of the restaurant and they changed their design to incorporate more of them into the restaurant.

“Originally, the client only wanted the tiles in a small area of the restaurant but once they saw how good they looked they extended them throughout the building. They added them into the entrance hall and even used them for the bar top!”

“Everyone has been really happy with the tiles. I sent a big list over to Cosmo and they came straight back to me with a selection. I was quite demanding but they got me exactly what I wanted and it was a really quick turnaround. They were really helpful and I will definitely be back in touch next time I need tiling in Glasgow.”
