Gurdwara Temple

Glasgow Gurdwara, Nithsdale Road is the oldest Gurdwara in Scotland, home to the Sangat of Glasgow’s Southside community. Established in the 1960s, the Gurdwara has served as a focal point for the political and social activities for Scottish Sikhs for decades.

Over the years the Gurdwara has played host to various Sikh personalities and non-Sikh including Prime Minister Gordon Brown & Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The Executive Committee set about planning for a new temple a long time ago and the land was purchased nearly ten years ago from Network Rail (it was a disused Tram depot).

Having raised £3.8m from the local community the Committee chose local architects CRGP and the Govan based CBC as contractors. Cosmo stepped in with Jean Fergus of our Architectural Sales department working closely with Derek Fraser of CBC to offer tiles that met their budget and achieved the look required by the Sikh Community.

Jean Fergus tells us about Cosmo’s involvement: “I was contacted by Derek from CBS who has workd with Cosmo before but not with me personally. He needed us to take care of the tiling of all of the floors throughout the temple.

“Derek explained what he wanted, the colours that would fit in with the scheme and the budget available and we gave him a selection to take to the Sikh Council. Once they made their decision we were quick to get them laid and I am delighted to say that it was another job done on time and within budget!”

The temple was finally opened in April 2013 and it will serve as the new home for the Sikh community of Glasgow with the capacity to accommodate 1,500 worshippers.
